As a peak body, we provide policy advice and undertake systemic advocacy and engagement to shape the mental health system in Australia, and make it more responsive to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We represent the interests of our members across the mental health system and contribute to the evidence base that guides the work of the sector and identifies the needs of the community. We are a collective voice to change systems by centring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, cultures, and practices across the mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, and suicide prevention systems.
Through our policy and programs work, Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Australia:
Shapes national reform by contributing to strategies, frameworks, and agreements that influence mental health and suicide prevention at every level.
Advocates for culturally safe systems that embed the Gayaa Dhuwi Declaration’s ‘best of both worlds’ approach, combining cultural and clinical models of care.
Partners with governments and services to co-design solutions that reflect the strengths and priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Develops evidence and resources to strengthen the sector, build the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce, and ensure accountability through monitoring and reporting.
Delivers national initiatives and programs that foster leadership, prevention, and community connection, and impact-driven projects.
