We are governed and controlled by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experts and peak bodies, working to promote collective excellence in mental health care.

Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Australia is the national peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, and suicide prevention. As a community controlled organisation, we are governed and controlled by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experts and peak bodies, working in these areas to promote collective excellence in mental health care.

‘Gayaa’ means happy, pleased, and proud, and ‘Dhuwi’ means Spirit, in the Yuwaalarayy and Gamilaraay languages of north-west New South Wales.

Our vision is the highest attainable standard of social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, and suicide prevention outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our governance is drawn from the collective experience, knowledge, and history of our Board, our Members, and our Councils and Collaborative Networks.

Our work is guided by the nine Principles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing. These were first proposed in the 1989 National Aboriginal Health Strategy, and were expanded in the 1995 Ways Forward report.

Our strategic priorities are to:

  • Lead - Gayaa Dhuwi is the nationally inclusive and representative voice, leader, and advocate for systemic change.

  • Connect - Gayaa Dhuwi is people centred and has developed consultation methods that ensure community perspectives are included in system decisions.

  • Influence - Gayaa Dhuwi develops and promotes evidence that supports systemic change towards integrated cultural and clinical care to achieve a best of both worlds approach.

Transform - Gayaa Dhuwi influences the transformation of the Australian mental health system through policy, partnerships, and advocacy.
